A FINE RUSSET AND CELADON JADE ‘TAOTIE MASK’ DISK, BI, WESTERN HAN DYNASTY

China, 206 BC-9 AD. The stone of varying russet tones with two large celadon patches and icy white inclusions.

Provenance: Daniel Milano, Paris, France, 2002. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above. A copy of the original stamped and signed certificate of authenticity from D Milano, dated 18 September 2002, dating the present lot to the late Shang to early Western Zhou dynasty, accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than sixty years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.

Weight: 197.5 g
Dimensions: Diameter 17.7 cm

Jade bi decorated with a border of grain-pattern surrounded by a band of animal masks, began to appear around the middle to late period of the Warring States. A large number of related bi were excavated from the old capital of the State of Lu in Qufu, Shandong Province. Bi discs of similar type were also found in the Han dynasty tombs of the King of Nanyue and other nobles, demonstrating the high status and rank associated with bi such as the present lot. It has also been suggested that this type of bi disc may have served as ceremonial objects for Imperial sacrifice to the sun. For a detailed discussion, see Teng Shu P'ing, One Hundred Jades from the Lantien Shanfang Collection, 1995, p. 49-50.
