Description

? A FINE GREY SANDSTONE FIGURE OF VAJRA-TARA, 18TH TO 19TH CENTURY OR EARLIER

India, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh. Gracefully modeled, the sensuous female deity stands in a subtle tribhanga pose, her weight gently shifting onto the right leg. The figure displays three serene faces emerging from a single neck, each crowned with a tall, intricately plaited coiffure with rich ornamentation, and framed by elaborate earrings. Her voluptuous form is adorned with beaded necklaces, armlets, and a beaded girdle draping elegantly across the hips.

Provenance: From a private collection in England.
Condition: Good condition with extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, soil encrustations, obvious losses, repairs to the right leg, the heads reattached, with associated fills and touchups.

Weight: 14.8 kg
Dimensions: Height 66 cm

Tara is revered as the supreme female deity of the Vajrayana Buddhist pantheon, second only to the Buddha and often compared to Durga in the Hindu tradition. Among her forms, Vajra-Tara is especially venerated in Tantric Buddhism for her power to grant success, protection, and prosperity, with devotees seeking her blessings for worldly fulfillment and freedom from obstacles.

Literature comparison:
Compare sandstone figure of Vajra Tara, India, but dated to the Gahadavala dynasty, in the National Museum of India, which was possibly the prototype for the present piece. Note the museum piece has four heads.
