Description

A WOOD ‘GAYVYALA’ BRACKET, GUJARAT, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Western India. Superbly carved in the round, the figure depicts a rearing gajvyala with hind legs raised and mouth agape, issuing buds borne on long stems, one draped over its shoulder. The curling trunk is framed by sharp tusks, the head detailed with almond-shaped eyes and leaf-shaped ears. Its powerful body combines the muscular form of a feline with the feathery plumage of a peacock.

Provenance: From the collection of Paul Atkinson, acquired between 1970 and 2007. Paul Atkinson is a passionate and wide-ranging collector whose career has spanned over five decades. Known for his boundless curiosity and entrepreneurial spirit, Atkinson began his journey in the antiques trade during the 1970s, sourcing pieces from regional sales and eventually opening his first shop in Matlock, Derbyshire. At one of his first auctions as a 20-year-old in 1970, a veteran dealer came over to Atkinson at a farm sale and said, “you think that you have joined a business, don't you?” Atkinson responded, “Well, this isn't a business – it's an illness from which you never recover”. His eye for the unique and rare quickly led him to the international stage, exporting English furniture to the United States and Europe and expanding into fields such as Pre-Colombian, tribal, and ethnographic art. Over the years, Atkinson built an eclectic collection that includes Grand Tour bronzes, Anglo-Indian carvings, Ottoman arms, African masks, and European furniture. His reputation was solidified with the opening of a gallery in the Louvre des Antiquaires in Paris, and later through his restoration of Sydnope Hall, once the home of Charles Darwin’s family. Together with his wife Vivien, an experienced art market professional, Atkinson later relocated to Mallorca, where they opened a major gallery catering to a distinguished international clientele.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, expected age cracks with associated minor fills. Few chips, minor losses, signs of weathering, encrustations. The wood with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina.

Weight: 7,271 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 61 cm (the bracket), 63 cm (incl. stand)

Mounted on a metal stand. (2)

The gayvyala belongs to the group of composite mythical beasts (ihamriga), which also includes forms such as the kinnara (horse–human) and the sinhvyala (lion–tiger). This hybrid creature—part elephant, tiger, and bird—was among the most popular designs of the type, commonly adorning brackets (madal) and struts of traditional Gujarati houses.

Gujarat’s wood architecture is a testament to the region’s rich artisanal heritage, particularly evident in the traditional havelis of Patan and Ahmedabad, where intricately carved columns, brackets, and balconies feature detailed geometric, floral, and textile-inspired motifs. These structures, dating as far back as the 16th century, highlight the enduring craftsmanship of the Hindu Suthar community, whose legacy of wood carving continues to shape the state’s cultural identity. While modern architecture in Gujarat has shifted away from wood, its historical significance endures—most strikingly in landmarks like the Swaminarayan Temple in Kalupur, Ahmedabad, where elaborately carved wooden elements reflect both religious devotion and artistic excellence.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related wooden bracket, North or Central Gujarat, mid-19th century, in the South Asia Collection Museum, Norwich, accession number IN 14, and illustrated by Jay Thakkar, Report on Wooden Architecture Collection of Gujarat at SADACC Trust, United Kingdom, 2015, p. 43-44.
