Description

A MINIATURE PAINTING OF TWO LOVERS ON A TERRACE BEFORE THE COMING STORM, PAHARI, KANGRA, LATE 18TH-EARLY 19TH CENTURY

North India, Punjab Hills. Opaque pigments and gilt on paper. Finely painted to depict two lovers standing on a palace terrace, gazing at each other intently, while overlooking a tranquil lake beneath a stormy, cloud-filled sky. The richly attired couple dressed in translucent garments that clearly reveal the elegant contours of their bodies. Their clothing adorned with intricate decorative patterns, gold embroidery, and large beaded necklaces, as well as distinctive headgear.

Provenance: From a private collection in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The back inscribed with the number ‘50’.
Condition: The painting in very good condition with minor wear and little flaking to pigments around the edges, as expected from this type of works. The frame in similar condition with sparse nicks, light scratches, and small age cracks, as well as rubbing and flaking to gilding.

Dimensions: 21.3 x 15.8 cm (excl. frame), 46.8 x 37.1 cm (incl. frame)

Mounted and framed behind glass.

This painting embodies the ideals of samyoga, or ‘love in union’. As M. S. Randhawa noted, paintings depicting love in union during the rains are numerous. The onset of the monsoon, with its dark, rolling clouds, the play of lightning, the flight of egrets and Saras cranes against slate-blue skies, and the calls of peacocks, holds a unique fascination for the Indian sensibility. Hindu poets have celebrated the joys of the rains, and Kangra artists have vividly conveyed that delight in their works. See Mohinder S. Randhawa, Kangra Paintings on Love, Bombay, 1962, p. 162.

Compare a related Pahari miniature painting of Raja Bhup Singh's rendezvous in the moonlight, dated c. 1800, opaque watercolor on paper, in the Museum Rietberg, inventory number 2005.109.
