Description

A MUGHAL PAINTING OF PRINCE SALIM (THE FUTURE EMPEROR JAHANGIR) RECEIVING WATER FROM VILLAGE GIRLS AT A WELL

North India, 18th-19th century. Opaque pigments and gilt on paper. Finely painted to depict the prince on horseback pausing at a well, where he is attended by a maiden offering a small jug of water. Three further maidens observe the encounter, while several other women, balancing water jars upon their heads, engage in animated conversation.

The young ladies dressed in flowing skirts embroidered with delicate patterns and translucent silk blouses that reveal their prominent feminine forms, adorned with beaded necklaces. The scene unfolds within a verdant natural landscape populated by lively animals, with distant palaces rising on the horizon against the warm orange glow of the setting sun.

Inscriptions: The upper and lower margins each with two lines of inscription in Nastaliq script, including a signature bottom center, 'Nasir al-Din Mahmoud'. The back of the folio with a lengthy Persian inscription.

Provenance: Monaco trade, acquired from an old private estate.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, expected browning, light creasing, and small losses to edges.

Dimensions: Size 33.7 x 25.6 cm

The present painting probably depicts Prince Salim drawing water from a well, which reflects Jahangir’s careful self-fashioning as a righteous, humble, and almost Sufi-like prince, cultivating an image of spiritual piety alongside royal authority. This scene, emblematic of his persona, remained so resonant that even in the 18th and 19th centuries later Mughal and Indo-Persian workshops continued to recycle and reimagine it. Jahangir’s enduring fame as both an aesthete and an extraordinary patron of the arts ensured that such princely episodes were not only preserved but also revitalized across generations, serving as visual testimony to his lasting cultural and symbolic significance.

More generally, the depiction of a prince on horseback receiving water from maidens at a village well was a popular motif in eighteenth-century Mughal painting. As Toby Falk observes in connection with two comparable works, the scene may draw upon more than one literary source: a 1658 poem by Muhammad Akram recounting the love story of Shahid and Wafa, and the tale of Mohana Rani and Chel Batao, the latter proposed by Ananda Coomaraswamy. See Toby Falk and Mildred Archer, Indian miniatures in the India Office Library, 1981, p. 122-123, no.195; Falk, Paintings from Mughal India, 1979, p. 56-57, no. 26; and Ananda Coomaraswamy, The History of Indian and Indonesian Art, 1927.
