Description

AN IMPORTANT BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI WITH A FLAMING AUREOLE, SRIVIJAYA EMPIRE, 7TH-8TH CENTURY

Sumatra (present-day Indonesia). Gracefully cast, standing in samabhanga, with the right hand lowered in varada mudra, the palm incised with a delicate flowerhead, and the left hand grasping the hem that emerges from the sleeve of the diaphanous shawl draped over the figure and cascading elegantly from the forearms. The gently rounded face with a serene expression, distinguished by heavy-lidded eyes beneath finely incised arched brows, a broad nose, and full lips forming a calm smile, all framed by pierced, elongated earlobes. The hair arranged in tight curls over the domed ushnisha, encircled by a flaming aureole. The bronze surface with a rich, naturally developed patina with malachite encrustations.

Provenance: Collection of Tijl de Bakker, Antwerp, Belgium. La Balaustra Antichità, Arte Archeologia classica orientale e precolombiana, 1999, Bologna, Italy. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022), acquired from the above. A copy of a stamped certificate written by Giuliana Zanetti of Antichità La Balaustra, adressed to Paolo Bertuzzi, dated 21 January 1999, dating the present lot to the 7th-8th centuries and confirming the provenance above, accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than sixty years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear, casting irregularities, and extensive traces of weathering and erosion, including few minute nicks, losses and light surface scratches. The central flame of the halo reattached. The bronze with an attractive, naturally developed patina with vibrant malachite encrustations.

Weight: 6.7 kg (excl. stand), 10.1 kg
Dimensions: Height 52.5 cm (incl. stand), 37.9 cm (excl. stand)

Mounted on an old wood stand. (2)

In Buddhist art, the nimbus is often imagined as consisting not just of light, but also of real flames. While this type seems to first appear in Chinese bronzes of which the earliest surviving examples date from before 450, it became something of a hallmark for the most important Chola bronzes, such as Shiva Nataraja, an image which emerged around 800 AD in Southern India, at the height of the Chola Empire. In the present statue, the depiction of the twelve flames is rather formal, as they are neatly arranged in identical intervals around a ring aureole, almost like on an ancient sundial.

Expert’s note: Buddhist art produced in Indonesia during the 8th and 9th centuries under the patronage of the Shailendra dynasty displays a unique amalgam of regional artistic styles borrowed from the Indian subcontinent. The flowing contours of the body subtly delineated beneath the diaphanous garment are reminiscent of the Gupta style of northern India while the sloping shoulders and oval face with full cheeks recall the Sri Lankan Buddha images produced in Anuradhapura during the 7th and 8th centuries.
