Description

A LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA, CENTRAL JAVA, 7TH-8TH CENTURY

Indonesia. Exquisitely modeled, standing in samabhanga, his right hand raised in shuni mudra and the left clutching the hem of his diaphanous sanghati that drapes across both shoulders, falling in deep U-shaped folds and flaring downward in a gently undulating hemline, revealing the slender outlines of the body. The gently rounded face with a serene expression, heavy-lidded eyes below arched brows above a broad nose and pursed lips forming a calm smile, the hair arranged in large snail-shell curls over the domed ushnisha. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown patina with malachite encrustations.

Provenance: Collection of Tong Djoe, acquired in Singapore c. 1990-1995. Alexander Goetz, Bali, Indonesia, acquired from the above. A copy of a certificate of authenticity (COA), confirming the dating and provenance of the present lot, issued by Gallery 101 and signed by Alexander Goetz, accompanies this lot. Tong Djoe (1926-2021) was Indonesian, but lived mainly in Singapore He was a prominent collector of Indonesian bronzes and Chinese Porcelain. Alexander Goetz is a noted German art expert and collector who specializes in Indonesian works of art. As a young man, he built and sailed wooden boats around the world, and eventually arrived in Bali in 1971. Within a year, he became involved in the local art scene and in 1975, he was sponsored by the Indonesian Institute of Science to do research on contemporary art in Bali. In 1990, Goetz and his family moved to London where he opened the eponymous gallery specializing in Southeast Asian art, with Indonesia as the main focus. Since 2015, Alexander Goetz has run Gallery 101, a dedicated art space in Kabupaten Badung, Bali.
Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, casting irregularities, signs of weathering and erosion, and encrustations. The bronze with a thick, naturally grown, vibrant patina with extensive malachite encrustations.
