Description

A SMALL BRONZE FIGURE OF SRI DEVI, MAJAPAHIT PERIOD, EAST JAVA, 14TH-15TH CENTURY

Indonesia. Heavily cast, standing barefoot on a circular double-lotus base, with both hands held before the abdomen in a gesture of offering, presenting a longevity fruit. The figure attired in a long dhoti with neatly rendered pleats, secured by a sash at the waist. Her round face with a serene expression, characterized by downcast eyes beneath gently arched brows, a slender nose, and a subtle, beguiling smile. Her hair finely arranged and held by a tiara and a karanda mukuta of piled rings, all set against a small circular nimbus.

Provenance: Daniel Milano, Paris, France, 2004. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above. A copy of the original invoice from D Milano, dated 21 March 2004, addressed to Paolo Bertuzzi, and stating a purchase price for the present lot of EUR 1,800 or approx. EUR 3,000 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than sixty years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.

Dimensions: Height 18.5 cm

During the Majapahit period, a time marked by flourishing trade, cultural syncretism, and artistic innovation, sculptors elevated the visual representation of female deities to align with the grandeur of the royal court. Elaborate headdresses, intricately carved jewelry, and garments with flowing, textured patterns were crafted to emulate the attire of royalty. This artistic approach symbolized the interconnectedness of divine authority and earthly sovereignty, reinforcing the sacred nature of kingship within the Hindu-Buddhist framework of the Majapahit Empire.

Sri Devi and Bhu Devi are the consorts of Vishnu, both considered manifestations of the goddess Lakshmi. Their iconography is closely related, underscoring Vishnu’s equal affection towards them. Sri Devi embodies prosperity and abundance, understood as sustaining forces of the universe, while Vishnu represents cosmic preservation and order. In Vaishnava tradition, she is regarded as a compassionate intermediary between devotees and Vishnu, bestowing both material and spiritual wealth. Her presence is a constant feature in temples and households, symbolizing well-being and good fortune.
