In Sasanian times, a good Zoroastrian was expected to allocate one-third of the day to agriculture, one-third to philosophical contemplation, and one-third to eating, repose, and cultivated enjoyment. The profusion of Sasanian luxury goods must therefore be understood in relation to the heightened significance attributed to this final segment of the daily cycle, a domain in which refinement, ritualized practices, and sociability assumed a central and codified role.

Luxury utensils fashioned from precious materials such as gold emerged within this broader cultural framework as critical markers of rank and cultural identity within the Sasanian court, celebrated in literary and historical sources for its exceptional opulence. Gold was intimately associated with divine luminosity and royal authority, embodying the ‘khvarenah’, the royal glory believed to legitimize and protect kingship. Accordingly, even objects intended for quotidian use, including plates, bowls, and drinking vessels, were produced in gold or in silver lavishly embellished with gilding. For a comprehensive discussion of the cultural significance of richly adorned gold and gilt-metal everyday utensils at the Sasanian court, see Edith Porada, The Art of Ancient Iran, 1965, p. 214–221.
