A FINE SILVER REPOUSSE ‘HERD OF LIONS’ JAR, SASANIAN DYNASTY

Iran, 224–651. Of globular form, the rounded sides rising from a tall foot to a waisted neck surmounted by a flaring mouth with a lipped rim, finely chased to the body with a herd of lions prancing through a landscape with sparse vegetation, the faces of the felines protruding and embossed in high relief, framed by lappet bands to the neck and above the foot.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Fair condition, commensurate with age. Ancient wear, manufacturing irregularities, small losses, some warping, scattered nicks and scratches, dents, and expected tarnish. Scattered traces of soldering. Some old repair work, at least two of the heads are reattached. Also some minor patch repairs. Overall displaying exceptionally well.

Weight: 765 g
Dimensions: Height 19.6 cm

Under the Sasanians, Iranian art experienced a general renaissance. Architecture often took on grandiose proportions, as seen in the palaces at Ctesiphon, Fīruzabad, and Sarvestan. Perhaps the most characteristic and striking relics of Sasanian art are the rock sculptures carved on abrupt limestone cliffs—for example, at Shahpur (Bishapur), Naqsh-e Rostam, and Naqsh-e Rajab. Metalwork and gem engraving became highly sophisticated. Scholarship was encouraged by the state, and works from both the East and the West were translated into Pahlavi, the language of the Sasanians.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related silver vessel decorated with lions, Sasanian dynasty, exhibited in the Musée Cernuschi, Les Perses Sassanides, Fastes d’un empire oublié 224-642, 15 Septembre-30 Décembre 2006.
