Description

A LARGE SILVER ALLOY SCROLL CASE

Persia, probably 17th-18th century. Of elongated form, richly decorated with chased floral motifs arranged in alternating bands, the central register displays a large blossoming flower flanked by scrolling foliage, framed by narrower panels of curling vines and palmettes that continue symmetrically toward each end. Each terminal is capped with a domed finial encircled by petal designs, culminating in a small turned knob and opening to one side.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired in Dubai in the 1990s. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear and casting irregularities. Tiny nicks, shallow surface scratches, general traces of usage, some tarnish to the silver and minuscule malachite encrustations to the inside.
