Description

A QAJAR SILVER INLAID AND DAMASCENED STEEL SHIELD, SIPAR, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Iran. Of circular form and concave section, modeled with four floral bosses centered by a medallion depicting a fearsome human-like face with bulging eyes, long mustache, and curling horns, surrounded by a wide band of alternating tall trees and palm leaves, all finely inlaid with silver wire and reserved against a richly worked ground of scrolling foliage interspersed with flying birds and addorsed wild animals, encircled by a band of shaped cartouches bearing inscriptions in cursive thuluth. The interior is decorated with a floral pattern and lined with padded red silk.

Provenance: From a private collection in Croatia.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, traces of use, and manufacturing irregularities, light rubbing and minor tarnish to silver, the silk partially hanging loose and with small tears and loose threads.

Weight: 2,869 g
Dimensions: Diameter 46.6 cm

The inscriptions encircling the shield, executed in highly stylized thuluth script with tightly compressed ligatures, typical of qajar shields and helmets, feature various qur’anic verses and religious invocations. These texts function both as apotropaic devices, intended to protect and empower the wearer, and as declarations of religious identity. Among the legible phrases are ‘There is no deity but Allah’ (la ilaha illa allah) and ‘Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ (muhammad rasulu allah), constituting the Shahada, as well as ‘Ali is the friend and guardian of Allah’ (ali waliyu allah). Collectively, these inscriptions operate symbolically as a verbal shield against evil, reinforce faith, and serve as an emblem of both spiritual and worldly authority.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related Indo-Persian gold and silver damascened shield, dated early 19th century, 41 cm diameter, in the Musée de Grenoble, inventory number MG 2010-0-117.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Christie’s London, 20 April 2007, lot 230
Price: GBP 8,400 or approx. EUR 19,500 (for two) converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A Qajar damascened steel helmet and shield, Iran, 19th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form and decoration with four bosses and a central human-like face as well as similarly damascened quranic inscriptions. Note the related size (48.2 cm) and that this lot further comprises a helmet.
