拍品描述
Western India, Rajasthan or Gujarat. Heavily cast, the naked figure seated in dhyanasana with his hands folded onto each other in the lap above a triangular base with canted edges, the chest centered by a srivatsa emblem, the serene face with downcast almond-shaped eyes and full bow-shaped lips forming a gentle smile, flanked by elongated earlobes, the hair neatly incised with circular designs evoking curls.Provenance: The collection of Louis & Helen Regenstein, Atlanta, Georgia, United States, thence by descent. Louis Regenstein, Jr. (1912-1994) was the only son of Louis and Venia, founders of Regenstein's Department Store in Atlanta. He graduated with honors from Harvard College and Harvard Law, later serving as a senior partner at the law firm now known as Kilpatrick, Townsend & Stockton. Helen Moses Regenstein (1918-2023) majored in history at the Agnes Scott College, South Carolina, where she met her future husband Louis Regenstein. Throughout her life, Helen served on many philanthropic committees and boards including The Alliance Theatre, The High Museum, and The Temple, and also served as Parliamentarian of the Atlanta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Together, the couple traveled the world, collected a wide range of objects including fine art and furniture, and entertained exquisitely, hosting Elizabeth Arden at the Gone with the Wind Premiere Ball in 1939. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, some malachite and cuprite encrustations between the base and figure, minor soil encrustations at the armpits, casting irregularities, few nicks, and light scratches. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 5.5 kg Dimensions: Height 19.2 cmThe twenty-four Tirthankaras represent Jainism's spiritual masters, who freed themselves from the chains of rebirth and departed our world. As such, they cannot be invoked through their statues, like the deities of Hinduism or Buddhism. Rather their effigies serve as reminders of the faith's tenets and rewards. While their humanity assures the devotee that liberation from the cycle of rebirth is possible for him or her too, to focus on it is to become distracted from the transcendent ideals that the Tirthankaras embody. As such, there has always been a predilection towards abstraction in Jain sculpture, with symmetry equated with purity. The nudity of Jain saints was a practice of both asceticism and their belief in non-possession, dating back to the days of Mahavira. However, a schism arose in around 79 AD, extensively recorded in literature, about what constitutes total renunciation. At the time, Jain monks separated into rival factions, the Digambaras ('clothed with the sky'), who were nude, and the Svetambaras ('clothed with white'), who wore white cloths. According to inscriptions, the Svetambaras worshiped the nude image without objection and for both sects the Jinas and the saint Bahubali are represented naked while all other deities are clothed and even ornamented.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related brass figure of a Jain saint, also heavily cast, 5.3 kg, 19 cm tall, in the Horniman Museum & Gardens, museum number 238. Compare a related bronze figure of Tirthankara Shitalanatha in the Ranakpur Jain Temple, Rajasthan.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams New York, 13 March 2017, lot 3109 Price: USD 125,000 or approx.
