In his book ‘The Language of Adornment’ Filippo Salviati writes: arc-shaped pendants, huang, one of the typical classes of Chinese ornaments fashioned in jade, are documented in archeological finds as early as the Neolithic Songze culture [c. 4000-3400 BC). During the Eastern Zhou period, discs and pendants became extremely elaborate, though the grain patterns remained a constant feature of the surface decoration. The present pair represents the simplest form of huang in the Eastern Zhou period. These were probably made from one block of raw material and have regular flanges on the edges, a feature seen on several 4th-3rd-century BC huang pendants.
