Description

A MOTTLED GREY JADE BELT ORNAMENT, EASTERN ZHOU DYNASTY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), Radiant Stones. Archaic Chinese Jades, Paris, 2000, no. 99.

China, c. 5th century BC. Of oval form, carved in openwork as a belt buckle and decorated with four groups of dragons arranged within the quadrants of the oval, each section defined by a central cross-shaped division. The dragons, rendered in a flowing horizontal S-shape, are detailed with a continuous raised ridge. At the midpoint of the sides, rectangular dowels extend outward, intended for attachment to a belt. The stone is semi-translucent with a pale grey hue, marked by areas of dark brown, russet specks and creamy calcification.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with wear, traces of weathering and signs of prolonged burial, minuscule nibbling, smoothened nicks, and natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.

Weight: 77 g
Dimensions: Length 9 cm

During the Eastern Zhou period, personal ornaments in jade included belt accessories such as belt hooks, girdles and pendants to be worn at the waist, like the one presented here. Adding ornamental elements to belts was a practice derived from the nomadic people of the regions north of China. A similar ornament, with the four sections filled with spiral motifs in low relief, was discovered in 1988 at Jinshengcun (Taiyuan, Shanxi province). Similar oval-shaped elements were excavated from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng at Huixian (Leigudun, Hunan). It is possible that this type of oval-shaped ornament, given its sporadic occurrence in the archaeological records, was one of the occasional jade emulations of similar objects made of other materials. It is interesting to note that the same type of ornament, crafted from gold, is found in Korean 5th-6th century princely belts.
