Located in present-day Shandong province, the Longshan and Dawenkou cultures emerged in the late Neolithic period between the northern Hongshan and southern Liangzhu cultural zones. Both cultures utilized jade primarily as a marker of social status and authority. However, in contrast to their neighbors and predecessors, Dawenkou and Longshan communities used jade less extensively, producing mainly small adornments, and ritual blades. Among their distinctive jade artifacts are notched rings, yabi, which reflect the evolution of earlier jade forms. These rings represent a category that remains only partially understood, though their design appears to have developed from smaller ornaments associated with the Hongshan culture.
