Description

AN ARC-SHAPED JADE ‘DRAGON’ PENDANT, LATE SHANG DYNASTY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), The Language of Adornment. Chinese Ornaments of Jade, Crystal, Amber and Glass, Paris, 2002, no. 12.

China, ca. 1300–1100 BC. Of arc shape, finely carved as a dragon in profile with a short snout, large round eyes, subtly incised decoration, and a long-curved tail. The near opaque stone now of ochre color due to creamy calcification. A single minuscule perforation for suspension at the snout. The protrusion at the lower end is evidence that the pendant was re-carved from a collared disk.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with wear, traces of weathering and signs of prolonged burial, and minuscule nicks.

Weight: 15 g
Dimensions: Length 9.3 cm

In his book ‘The Language of Adornment’ Filippo Salviati writes: during the late Shang period personal adornment regained its significance, as evidenced by the hundreds of ornaments in bone, ivory and jade found in the tomb of Fu Hao at Ayang. Most were in the form of animals drawn both from nature, such as the fish and from mythology like the dragon.
