Japan, 1573-1615. The body of globular form tapering towards the flat base and surmounted by a tall neck with a gently flaring mouth terminating in a pointed spout, modestly decorated with an incised craggy band around the broad shoulders. The surface of the body with a reddish brown color around the neck and gray-brown tone around the body, splashed with an olive-green natural-ash glaze.

Provenance: Ex-collection Yoichiro Ogawa (1939-2002). The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012. Yoichiro Ogawa, also known by his art name Dō-Ki—meaning “between the spirits and men”—was a Japanese painter born in Fukuoka. The heir to a distinguished family of antique dealers, Ogawa was not only an accomplished artist but also a renowned expert in Asian antiques, widely respected as a leading connoisseur in the field.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including pitting, firing cracks, encrustations, and surface eruptions. An old repair to a small section of the mouth.

A chatsubo is a Japanese tea jar, traditionally used to store tencha (tea leaves before they are ground into matcha).
