Japan, 1336-1573. Ink, watercolors, and gouache on paper. Mounted on silk brocade and set inside a frame, behind glass. Finely painted to depict an aspirant to the Western Pure Land precariously balancing on a narrow white path as he walks towards Buddha Amitabha, a river of fire and a river of water on either side. Near the white path on the eastern bank is Sakyamuni Buddha urging the traveler to take the path, all while a troop of bandits and a pack of wilder beasts pursue the man.

This painting is a visual presentation of a parable ascribed to the seventh-century Chinese Buddhist monk Shandao. It describes the fraught journey to the west along a narrow path between a river of fire and a river of water. Along the way, the traveler is set upon by bandits and dangerous beasts, but is also guided by two friends. The story is an analogy for the journey out of the Six Realms of Transmigration to the Pure Land of the Buddha Amida.

The river of fire represents anger, and that of water, greed. The white path symbolizes the slim possibility of awakening faith in a mind full of evil passions. The voice from the eastern bank is the teaching of Sakyamuni, and that from the western bank, the summons of Amitabha (Amida Buddha). The western bank represents the destination — the Western Pure Land.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related, earlier, silk painting of the Two Rivers and the White Path, 13th century, preserved at the Komyoji, Nagaokakyo, Kyoto.
