Description

AN UNUSUAL BLUE AND WHITE ‘BAIZITANG’ BOWL, LATE MING DYNASTY, WANLI-CHONGZHEN PERIOD
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

China, 1573-1644. The interior painted with a Buddhist gathering comprising 57 monks seated at low desks, behind fences, and between pillars of a large temple. The exterior decorated with five roundels, each enclosing a nostalgic scene depicting a scholar seated at the shore, against a wan-diapered ground glazed white and carved to reveal the biscuit. The upper rim lined by a geometric border, and the recessed base with a double circle.

The upper section is inscribed with three characters reading ‘Baizitang’ (Hundred Children Hall).

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, firing flaws including fritting along the rim, small elevations at the well, few dark spots, and small firing cracks to the base.

Weight: 262 g
Dimensions: Diameter 15.2 cm

Literature comparison:
Compare a related blue and white bowl decorated with roundels against a similar carved biscuit-fired wan-diaper ground, dated Tianqi-Chongzhen period, in the British Museum, registration number Franks.756. Another example of this ground can be found in a blue and white wine pot, dated to the Wanli period, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 27 November 2013, lot 3517.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Christie’s New York, 16 March 2015, lot 3510
Price: USD 4,750 or approx. EUR 5,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A blue and white shallow bowl, Tianqi period
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form, cobalt-blue decoration, interior motif, and size (15.5 cm). The baizitang inscription found on the present lot is missing here. This bowl was purchased by J. J. Lally, who bought it for the Metropolitan Museum of Art where the bowl is held to this day, accession number 2015.270, described as “[m]ade for use in Japan”.
