Description

A SMALL BLUE AND WHITE EWER, LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

China, 16th-17th century. Well potted with a pear-shaped body supported on a tall spreading foot with central rib and rising to a slender neck surmounted by a garlic-head with gently tapered mouth, set with a long, elegantly curved handle and spout. Finely painted in shades of cobalt blue with a stylized lotus flower topped by a foliate finial above a ruyi-form cloud, the neck and mouth decorated with floral bands, the spout and handle with foliate designs as well a key-fret-patterned lobed cartouches at their bases, and the foot encircled by stylized floral sprays within lined borders.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities including fine firing cracks to the base, minor fritting, small glaze recesses, a thin crack around the bridge that connects the spout to the rim.

Weight: 176 g
Dimensions: Height 14.4 cm

The form of the present ewer is derived from metal examples used throughout the Islamic world. Islamic culture significantly influenced the design of Chinese ewers, particularly during the Ming dynasty, due to extensive trade and cultural exchange along the Silk Road. Islamic metalwork prototypes, along with motifs, shapes, and decorative elements, were adopted and adapted into Chinese porcelain production.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related larger blue and white ewer, dated to the Qing dynasty, 17th century, 31.3 cm high, in the Museum für Asiatische Kunst, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, identification number OAS1952-22. Compare a related blue and white ewer of similar form, dated late 15th-early 16th century, 24 cm high, in the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Toronto, object number G99.1.1.
