China, 10th-11th century. Dexterously carved, the flying immortal supported by swirling clouds. The lower part of his body terminating in a bifurcated plumed tail, while the shoulders, chest, and back further detailed with pointed feathers, and the face bearing a boldly carved serene expression. The ‘yuren’ holding in its hands a vase from which a cloud of vapors emerges, likely representing the elixir of immortality, jealously guarded by the immortals and long sought by men.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear, natural inclusions, sparse nicks, and small areas with soil encrustation.

Weight: 86.7 g
Dimensions: 8.4 cm

The flying divinity identified as a ‘yuren’ is one of the most popular figures of Daoist religious belief. The ‘yuren’ or ‘feathered beings’ were believed to have transcended the boundaries of human life. Although somewhat human in appearance, their bodies were covered with feathers and, in Han art, they were often represented as winged. The plumage alludes to a physical transformation which occurred in these beings when they had reached final realization and were able to fly and dwell on the top of high mountains.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related rock crystal carving of a yuren in the Tianjin Museum of Art, illustrated by Su Runlan, Tianjin yibo xinru zang de Liao, Jin yuqi (Jades of the Liao and Jin periods recently acquired by the Tianjin Museum of Art), Soucangjia, 2000, figs. 9 and 10.
