Hongshan jades seem to oscillate between abstraction (or stylization) and representation. When deemed necessary, clearly identifiable animals were also carved in three-dimensional, small carvings, which were probably obtained from chunks of jade left over from bigger pieces: jade was too precious to be wasted; even the smallest pieces were carved, while the powder generated by the grinding process was used together with abrasives in the polishing or drilling of other jades. The most common animals carved on these ornaments are birds of prey with outstretched wings, turtles and small models of insects represented in their larval stage.
