A SMALL FAMILLE NOIRE BISCUIT FIGURE OF LI TIEGUAI, 18TH-19TH CENTURY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

China. Finely painted in vibrant enamels, the Daoist immortal standing atop a rectangular base, dressed in black, loose robes decorated with prunus blossoms. He is holding a yellow double gourd in his left hand and a cane in his right. The square face framed by a bushy beard and brows. The base reticulated and with a Buddhist symbols and blossoms to the sides.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, little rubbing to the enamels.

The present figure depicts Li Tieguai (Iron Crutch Li), one of the Eight Immortals. Li appears as a lame beggar supported by an iron crutch. He carries a gourd which holds medicine that cures the sick and ailing. Traditionally he has been seen as the protector of physicians. Although he may appear ugly and is generally considered irascible and ill-tempered, according to Chinese mythology, he was benevolent to the poor, sick and needy.

Compare a related polychrome enameled biscuit figure of Li Tieguai, dated to the 19th century, 27.3 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 63.213.9. Compare a related famille noire figure of Li Tieguai, dated to the Kangxi period, 30.2 cm tall, in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, accession number 1942.9.597.
