Description

A FAMILLE VERTE BISCUIT FIGURE OF LAN CAIHE, 18TH-19TH CENTURY
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

China. Finely modeled standing on a pierced square-sectioned stand, his left arm raised holding a flower-basket, wearing long flowing robes decorated with floral sprays, and the hair tied in two buns. The base detailed with blossoms and Buddhist emblems.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, two tiny chips and few nibbles to the base, and little rubbing to the enamels.

Weight: 137 g
Dimensions: Height 14.8 cm

Lan Caihe, whose emblem is a basket of flowers, is considered the patron of florists and gardeners, and is the only one of the Eight Immortals whose gender is ambiguous. Lan is not generally thought to be based on a historical person, but is traditionally said to have been born sometime during the Tang dynasty, and lived as a homeless street entertainer, who wandered all over China, singing philosophical songs.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related famille verte figure of He Xiangzi, dated to the Kangxi period, 26 cm tall, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number FE.13-1978.
