Description

A BRONZE ‘TSUBA’ SUITEKI (WATER DROPPER), SIGNATURE OF ISHIGURO MASAYOSHI
This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

Japan, 19th century. Cast in the form of a tsuba (sword guard) of marugata shape. Intricately worked in very fine iro-e takazogan of copper, depicting a delicately rendered praying mantis (kamakiri) amid the seven grasses and flowers of the autumn (Aki no nanakusa), a large cricket (koorogi) near the base, and a dragonfly (tombo) in flight above. The background is subtly textured with a field of fine beaded circles.

Inscriptions: Next to the nakago-ana, ‘Ishiguro Masayoshi sen’ [engraved by Ishiguro Masayoshi] with the kozuka hitsu-ana neatly framed within the circular composition.

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.
Condition:Excellent condition with minor wear, light scratches, and rubbing. The tsuba repurposed as a suiteki.

Weight: 299 g
Dimensions: Diameter 7.7 cm

Ishiguro Masayoshi (active late Edo period) was a celebrated Japanese metalworker renowned for his exquisite sword fittings (koshirae), particularly tsuba (handguards), kozuka (small knife handles), and menuki (hilt ornaments). He is listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 1004 (H 048807.0). Originally born into the Okamoto family, Masayoshi was adopted by Okamoto Yusen, linking him to a respected lineage of craftsmen. He studied under Sano Naoyoshi, a skilled artist, and also trained with Ishiguro Masatsune, the founder of the prestigious Ishiguro School—a lineage famed for its intricate and naturalistic metalwork, often depicting flora, fauna, and scenes from daily life or mythology in high relief and rich inlay.

Literature comparison:
Compare two related tsuba by Ishiguro Masayoshi in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object numbers 36.120.79 and 48.63.5a–l.
