Description

A LACQUER ZUSHI (PORTABLE SHRINE) WITH A GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF KANNON BOSATSU, LATE EDO-EARLY MEIJI PERIOD
This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

Japan, 19th century. Finely carved, the bodhisattva standing in samabhanga atop a circular double-lotus dais with beaded upper edge raised on a tiered balustraded hexagonal pedestal finely decorated with floral and lozenge motifs, the right hand raised in vitarka mudra and the left is lowered in dhyana mudra, dressed in loose-fitting robes cascading in richly carved folds, the face skillfully modeled in a serene expression with heavy-lidded eyes and gently parted lips forming a subtle smile, backed by an intricately carved cloud-form kohai (aureole) with a central openworked lotus blossom.

The shrine of typical form, the exterior finished in a lustrous roiro ground with copper fittings including shaped hinges, while the interior is richly lacquered in gold, heightening the sacred presence of the image within.

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.
Condition:Overall good condition with expected wear and manufacturing irregularities, minuscule nicks, small dents, few minor age cracks to the shrine, the kohai chipped at the top, flaking and minor losses to lacquer, few small losses to the figure, the hand possibly with an old repair, remnants of varnish and adhesive.

Weight: 570 g
Dimensions: Height 30.5 cm

Literature comparison:
Compare a related wood shrine with a gilt-lacquered wood figure of Yakushi Nyorai, formerly in the collection of Sir Henry Wellcome and now in the Science Museum, London, object number A123291.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Christie’s London, 26 April 2006, lot 2020
Price: GBP 840 or approx. EUR 2,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
