Description

A FIVE-TIERED JADE CONG, LIANGZHU CULTURE OR LATER

China, c. 3300-2200 BC or later. Well carved, of square cross section surrounding a cylindrically hollowed tube to the center. The sides are divided into five registers with a stylized mask at each of the four corners, comprising two long bars above alternating faces with small and large circular eyes centered by a bar forming the mouth, all embellished with meticulously incised lines. The opaque stone is of a pale beige tone with russet and dark gray areas and veins.

Provenance: From a German private collection.
Condition: Good condition overall, with age-related wear, weathering, scattered nicks, minute losses, and erosion. Some of the incision work may have been added or embellished at a later date, although this remains a possibility rather than a confirmed intervention. The stone contains natural inclusions and fissures, many of which have developed into distinct hairline cracks over time. Significant mineral alterations are evident, likely resulting from prolonged burial.

Weight: 3,295 g
Dimensions: Height 24.1 cm

Auction: Sotheby’s New York, 14 September 2019, lot 1258
Price: USD 30,000 or approx. EUR 33,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A Liangzhu-style calcified green jade cong, 20th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form, manner of carving, calcified stone, and size (24 cm). Note this lot was previously in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and came from the collection of Florence and Herbert Irving. The hammer price exceeded the high estimate tenfold which indicates that bidders were left unconvinced by Sotheby’s 20th-century dating of this cong.
