Description

A PAUBHA OF THE VASUDHARA MANDALA, NEPAL, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

Gold and distemper on cloth. Finely painted and richly detailed, Vasudhara seated in lalitasana at the center on a lotus throne, framed by a torana and flanked by red Avalokiteshvara on the left and green Vajrapani on the right. Enclosed within walls, the vibrant red background is filled with deities making offerings on golden plates or pouring them from bags. Elaborate gates mark the cardinal points, surrounded by a lotus circle with additional deities. The composition is bordered with didactic scenes, featuring the five transcendental Buddhas flanked by Bodhisattvas at the top and the seven jewels of Buddhism at the bottom.

Provenance
: From a private estate in southern Germany. A private collection in Vienna, Austria, acquired from the above via the local auction market.
Condition: The work with some creasing, touchups, flaking to the pigments, losses, loose threads, some soiling, and two small burn marks to the back. Overall still displaying well, commensurate with age.

Dimensions: Image size 122 x 94.5 cm

As the goddess of abundance, good fortune and fertility, the six-armed Vasudhara is highly popular in Nepal. From top to bottom, her left arms bear the Prajnaparamita sutra, rice stems, and a kalasha; her right arms are in a mudra of salutation, holding a triratna (wish-fulfilling) jewel, and in varada mudra.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related paubha of the Vasudhara Mandala, Nepal, dated to 1777 (Samvat 897), in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2015.299.
