Description

A THANGKA DEPICTING BUDDHA AMITABHA IN SUKHAVATI HEAVEN, 18TH CENTURY

Tibetan-Chinese. Distemper and gold on cloth, mounted within a silk brocade frame. Finely painted with Buddha Amitabha at the center, seated on a lotus throne supported on a peacock base behind a towering temple surrounded by thick clouds. His hands are lowered in dhyana mudra and supporting an alms bowl, he is dressed in richly decorated, layered, and colorful robes, his face with a serene expression, backed by a blue mandorla and green aureole. He is surrounded by numerous bodhisattvas, centered by a table with offerings. The upper register depicts apsaras gliding above clouds.

Inscriptions: The reverse inscribed with the mantra ‘Om Ah Hum’ in Lantsa script.

Provenance: Collection of Bernhard Heibach, acquired in New Dheli between 1956 and 1959 during his service as Legation Counselor at the German Embassy, and thence by direct descent. A copy of a provenance statement written and signed by the present owner, dated 9 May 2025, and confirming the above accompanies the lot. Bernhard Heibach (1924-2016) was a distinguished German diplomat with a career spanning over three decades. After studying law and undergoing training for the higher foreign service, he joined the German Foreign Service in 1952. His postings included roles as Legation Secretary in Rio de Janeiro, Consul in Maputo, and Ambassador in Blantyre and Lisbon. From 1979 to 1987, he served as Deputy Ambassador in Vienna and later as Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCO in Paris.
