Description

A LARGE HEART-SHAPED CARNELIAN TALISMAN, WESTERN ASIA, CIRCA 2nd-1ST MILLENNIUM BC

The roughly cut amulet finely incised to one side with a leaf complete with veins and striations, and drilled with a large hole for suspension to the top. The material of a deep burgundy color with inclusions of dark blue, red, and ochre.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Good condition with wear, natural imperfections, old natural cracks, ancient smoothened chips and losses, and scattered nicks and scratches.

Compare an Egyptian carnelian heart-shaped amulet of smaller size (2.1 cm high), dated 1550-332 BC, in the World Museum, Liverpool, accession number M11957i. See also a green stone heart-shaped amulet with incision work dated to Dynasty 26-29, 3 cm high, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 10.130.1797.
