Description

A BROWN-GLAZED STONEWARE WATER DROPPER WITH DEER HEAD, ANGKOR PERIOD

Khmer Empire, 12th-14th century. Finely potted, the globular body supported on a short, rounded foot and surmounted by the head of a deer with short antlers, bulging eyes, and long snout, the neck with a small aperture. The head is covered in a finely crackled creamy-white glaze, while the body is glazed a lustrous dark brown, stopping above the foot to reveal the buff ware.

Provenance: From a private collection in France.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, firing irregularities, and traces of use, small scattered chips and light abrasion of exposed areas, losses and deterioration to glaze, the head with an old repair and associated touchups.
