A KHMER GOLD REPOUSSé ‘HEVAJRA TRIAD’ VOTIVE PLAQUE, THAILAND, LOPBURI PERIOD, 12TH-14TH CENTURY

Of rounded triangular form, superbly chased and embossed to depict the eight-headed Hevajra trampling on the struggling bodies of the four Maras, his arms radiating around him, flanked by naga-enthroned Buddha to the left and Prajnaparamita on the right, all below a lobed niche surrounded by an elaborately carved mandorla of flame-like scrolling foliage.

Provenance: The collection of a former ambassador in the Middle East, Budapest, Hungary, 1980. The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum, acquired from the above. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Onno Janssens Collection, Netherlands, acquired from the above. Copies of a Certificate of Authenticity and Declaration of Legal Origin from Dr. István Zelnik accompany this lot. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe. Onno Janssens (b. 1941) is an Olympiad bridge player and prominent collector of Himalayan and Buddhist art. After studying Tibetology, he began in the 1990s to assemble an impressive collection including thangkas, mandalas, stupas, ritual implements, and sculptures in bronze, copper, and stone, which he acquired from auction houses and dealers of the highest order. A part of the collection was sold at Christie’s New York on 22 March 2011, in a legendary sale which at the time achieved a record total for Indian and Southeast Asian Art. A selection of 88 of Himalayan objects from the Onno Janssens Collection were offered, next to other famous collectors including James and Marilynn Asldorf and Isao Kurita. His collection reflects his eye for quality and rarity, but also his desire for uncovering that rare and coveted work that few others, if any have. In his own words 'to put it quite simply, I’ve always felt it important to buy what I like. Any time I consider acquiring a new work for my collection, I must hold it in my hands. Only then will I truly know if it inspires me.’ Copies of a Certificate of Authenticity and Declaration of Legal Origin, accompany this lot.

Hevajra is the personification of enlightenment, the dance pose symbolizing the process of enlightenment as liberation from worldly constraints.

Several votive tablets from Jayavarman VII’s reign include Prajnaparamita in an assemblage comprising Buddha, Lokeshvara, and Vajrapa?ī. She also occupies a place in the universe of Hevajra, a Phase III deity of the Vajrayana. The cult of the deity must have been of considerable importance under Jayavarman VII given the available material evidence. Thus, reading the tablet as a cosmic map shows how Prajnaparamita ranks high in the universe of the Khmer Hevajra.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related votive clay tablet depicting Khmer Hevajra along with naga-enthroned Buddha and Prajnaparamita, 12th to 14th century, Lopburi, in the Rietberg Museum, Zurich, no. TG32.
