Description

A PAIR OF CARVED QINGBAI ‘PEONY’ BOWLS, SONG DYNASTY

China, 12th-13th century. The bowls with rounded sides raised on a short, straight foot and terminating in an everted rim, finely carved and combed to the well with a peony blossom, and covered overall in a translucent pale blue glaze thinning towards the rim and pooling in the recesses. (2)

Provenance: Collection of Solomon and Hannah Shahmoon, New Rochelle, New York, and thence by descent. One bowl with an old label to the base inscribed with an inventory number ‘920’. Solomon E. Shahmoon (1893-1987) emigrated to Shanghai from Baghdad in 1911 and became a renowned property developer and financier during the peak of the early 20th century building boom and the city's development as the major commercial center in Asia. His success was capped in 1927 by the construction of the eight-story Shahmoon Building dominating the Bund and sited above their Art Deco masterpiece, The Capitol Theater. In 1928 Mr. Shahmoon made Paris his residence, visiting Shanghai periodically to invest in property. In 1938 he re-visited Baghdad where he met and married Hannah, and the couple settled in Paris where their first daughter was born. The Shahmoons collected art, objects, carpets, and furniture, and at the end of 1939, left Paris ahead of the Nazis for New York, where they settled permanently, first in Manhattan and then in New Rochelle. Much of their collection from both Shanghai and Paris was eventually reunited with them in New Rochelle, where they raised their four daughters in their large, Spanish-style stucco home.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, manufacturing irregularities including light warping, minor fritting, and minuscule chips to the feet and upper rim, and hairlines around the sides.
