Description

A SLIP-INLAID CELADON STONEWARE ‘LOTUS’ BOTTLE VASE, GORYEO DYNASTY

Korea, 12th-13th century. The pear-shaped body supported on a short tapered foot and rising to a slender neck ending in a rolled lip. Neatly inlaid in white and iron slip with large lotus blossoms borne on leafy scrolling vines below a band of heart-shaped heads of auspicious fungus (bullocho) framed by bands of overlapping petals. All covered in a finely crackled celadon glaze, save for the base.

Provenance: From a private estate in California, United States.
Condition: Light wear, a fine hairline to the body, uneven glazing, little kiln grit to the base, slight warping, and fine surface scratches. The top 5 cm of the neck have been professionally restored.

Weight: 1.6 kg
Dimensions: Height 29.2 cm

With a wooden storage box. (2)

This inlay technique is called 'sanggam' and was invented by Korean ceramic artists in the twelfth century. The design was incised into the clay body of the vessel and then filled with slip (diluted clay). The excess slip would have been removed before the piece was biscuit fired, then the bottle was covered with a translucent celadon glaze and fired again. The development of the sanggam inlay technique signifies the elegance and innovativeness of Goryeo ceramic production; no similar inlay technique was used by Chinese craftsmen at this time.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related vase dated to the second half of the 12th century, 32 cm high, formerly in the collection of George Eumorfopoulos and now in the Benaki Museum, Athens, object number GE 2418.
