Description

A FINE A FAHUA-GLAZED BISCUIT FIGURE OF SHOULAO, MING DYNASTY

China, 1368-1644. Well-modeled as Shoulao, the God of Longevity, seated on the back of a recumbent deer while holding a scroll in his left hand, the deer's head emerging on his right and a crane on his left, dressed in fine robes, his face serene with mouth slightly open and downcast eyes under arched eyebrows, framed by pendulous earlobes, his hair tied at the back. Covered in vibrant Fahua glazes of turquoise, yellow, and deep blue. With a fitted wood stand raised on four cabriole legs.

Provenance: Private collection in Paris. UK private collection, acquired from the above.
Condition: Extensive wear and traces of use, with some old repairs and touch-ups to the head and the deer's ears. The deer's antlers are missing. Overall, the condition is consistent with the type of ware and commensurate with its age.

Weight: 1,426 g in total
Dimensions: Height 29 cm excluding the base, and 33 cm including the base

Auction result comparison: Compare a related Fahua figure of Zhenwu, dating to the Ming Dynasty, at Sotheby’s New York, Saturday at Sotheby’s: Asian Art, on 18 March 2017, lot 1036, sold for USD 8,125.
