AN AMUSING INLAID WOOD NETSUKE OF ONIWAKAMARU STRUGGLING WITH THE GIANT CARPUnsignedJapan, first half of the 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely carved to depict Oniwakamaru crouched atop the back of a writhing fish, wearing only a loincloth and a ribbon tied around his neck. The twisting fish with finely incised scales and fins aggressively trying to break free from the boy’s hold, its eyes double-inlaid in pale and dark horn, and its thick lips gently ajar revealing teeth within. The eyes of the boy double-inlaid in bone with dark wood pupils, and his loincloth is embellished to the sides with coral beads. Good himotoshi through the underside of the fish. Beautiful, deep patina.LENGTH 4 cmCondition: Very good condition with old wear and traces of use.Provenance: Ex-collection William H. Smith (1853-1923). Town of Framingham, 1923. Framingham History Center Museum, Massachusetts, transferred in 1966, inventory no. 63.147. Tremont Auction, Fall Asian Works of Art: Day I, 14 October 2017, Sudbury, lot 287. A private collection, acquired from the above.Oniwakamaru or ‘young devil child’ was the nickname given to the young warrior monk Musashibo Benkei (1155-1189) because of his enormous strength and violent nature. This netsuke shows the young boy attacking and slaying the giant carp that swallowed his mother.
