拍品描述
A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A COURTESAN WITH A KEMARI BALLUnsignedJapan, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Gracefully seated in a meditative pose, the courtesan is dressed in a voluminous kimono adorned with delicately incised geometric motifs, each fold of the garment carefully carved to suggest the subtle flow of silk. Resting in her lap, she holds a kemari ball with both hands—an emblem of refinement and courtly amusement. Her hair is neatly coiffed into a traditional topknot, and the back of her attire is adorned with a large obi. Good, asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside.HEIGHT 5.1 cmCondition: Excellent condition with minor wear.Museum comparison:For a related woodblock print of courtesans of the Chojiya and their attendants playing kemari, by Utagawa Toyokuni I, see the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 1970.501.
