拍品描述
HOKYUDO ITSUMIN: A FINE WOOD OKIMONO OF A PRIEST PELTING ONI WITH BEANSBy Hokyudo Itsumin, signed Hokyudo ItsuminJapan, Tokyo, Meiji period (1868-1912)Superbly carved to depict a priest dressed in loose-fitting robes with richly carved folds and neatly incised with rinzu diaper and cloud designs, standing in a dynamic pose with his right arm raised as he mercilessly pelts three hapless oni writhing in pain with soybeans. He holds a bucket filled with further beans, while a katana is strapped to his belt. Each of the figures with large eyes skillfully double-inlaid in pale and dark horn. The scene is highly animated and rich in detail, the angry priest’s left foot caught in his robe, the underside of which forms part of the base bearing the signature HOKYUDO ITSUMIN, while one of the demons lies on his belly which is engraved with the initials V. M.HEIGHT 10.2 cmCondition: Good condition with minor wear, a small loss to one demon’s arm, another’s foot with an old repair.Provenance: From a private collection in Montreal, Canada. The Setsubun festival is celebrated during the first day of spring and includes the rite of oni-yarai or mame-maki, where roasted beans are thrown at oni to rid the coming year of any demons and disease-bringing spirits.Auction comparison:Compare a related wood okimono of Shoki and oni, also signed Hokyudo Itsumin and dated to the Meiji period, 11 cm high, at Zacke, Asian Art Discoveries.
