A FINE AND EARLY WOOD NETSUKE OF SEIOBO

Unsigned
Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Published: Katchen, Arlette (2010) Netsuke 7, Vol. 2, p. 417, no. K936.

Finely carved as Seiobo (Xiwangmu), The Queen Mother of the West, standing and holding a large rattan basket filled with leafy peaches in front of her, dressed in a loosely fitted robe with long draping sleeves, her face with a sensitively crafted, benevolent expression. The back with generously excavated himotoshi, the larger hole cut in a peculiar irregular manner. The well-toned wood bearing a superb, deep patina.

HEIGHT 8.7 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor expected wear and traces of use.
Provenance: Ex-collection Julius and Arlette Katchen, Paris. Ex-collection David White, former president of the International Netsuke Society.

For a closely related style of himotoshi see lots 84 & 85.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related seal-type wood netsuke of Seiobo formerly in the Trumpf collection and now in the Linden Museum Stuttgart, inventory number OA 18596.
