Description

AN EARLY WOOD NETSUKE OF KANZAN AND JITTOKU

Unsigned
Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved to depict the two famous immortals Kanzan (Hanshan) and Jittoku (Shide), the latter holding a broom to the back as he drapes his other arm around his dear friend who chuckles contentedly, one hand raised to conceal his boisterous laugh. Each dressed in voluminous robes with long draping sleeves, their expression radiating with wisdom and humor as they unfurl a scroll, holding it taut on either side. Good himotoshi to the back. The well-worn wood bearing a superb, unctuous patina.

HEIGHT 6.8 cm

Condition: Good, worn condition with typical traces of use. One old fill to the handle of the broomstick. The feet with old, smoothened chips.
Provenance: From the Collection of Dr Reinhard Lohrberg (1943-2024), Hanover, acquired from Robert Fleischel in Tokyo, on 17 July 2013.
