Description

A SUPERB WOOD NETSUKE OF FUKUROKUJU WITH A KARAKO, ATTRIBUTED TO TSUJI

Attributed to Tsuji, unsigned
Japan, mid-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Published: Sydney L. Moss Ltd. (2010) They are all fire and every one doth shine. The Elly Nordskog Collection of Japanese Inro, Pipecases and Netsuke, London, pp. 428-429, no. 157.

The God of Longevity carved standing with his arms together in the front, enveloped in a loose-fitting robe with voluminous folds secured at the waist with a belt, a small fan suspended to the side, slightly straining under the weight of his young acolyte clambering over the treasure sack strung around his decidedly phallic shaped head. Lasciviously tongued, the Lucky God chortles with a thoroughly debauched-looking laugh, as the boy scales his domed scalp, hauling on a rope which, passed over the top of the head, pulls the knotted neck of the sack into an unmistakable prepuce shape. Generously excavated asymmetrical himotoshi to the back.

HEIGHT 6.2 cm

Condition: A restoration to the back and underside which encompasses the himotoshi and underside which bears the later added Kyoto Masanao signature. Otherwise good condition with minor surface wear and light traces of use, as are to be expected.
Provenance: Ex-collection Elinor “Elly” Nordskog (1919-2013). A noted private collection in Munich, Germany, purchased from Sydney Moss Ltd., London, on 1 December 2010.

Alain Ducros' recent research demonstrates that Tsuji, listed in the Soken Kisho of 1781, came not from Osaka as had been surmised, but from the southern island of Kyushu. He worked for a daimyo of the Hosokawa family and his approximate period of activity is confirmed as about 1750.
