Description

A WOOD NETSUKE OF RIHAKU

Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The poet dressed in a loosely fitted robe, seated resting against a bundle of sticks, laughing as he reads from a book. The well-toned wood bearing a fine, dark patina. Large, asymmetrical himotoshi underneath.

HEIGHT 4 cm, LENGTH 4.6 cm

Condition: One foot restored and small chip to the book. Otherwise good condition with minor expected wear and traces of use.
Provenance: From the collection of Mike Thaler, former president of the Oregon Netsuke Society Chapter.

Li Bai (701-762), known as Rihaku in Japan, was a Chinese poet acclaimed from his own day to the present as a genius and a romantic figure who took traditional poetic forms to new heights. His life has taken on a legendary aspect, including tales of drunkenness, chivalry, and the well-known fable that Li drowned when he reached from his boat to grasp the moon's reflection in the river while drunk.
