Description

A FINE KYOTO SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF A PUPPY BALANCING ON A KEMARI BALL, ATTRIBUTED TO OKATOMO

Attributed to Yamaguchi Okatomo, unsigned
Japan, Kyoto, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved, the curious puppy attempting to clamber atop a kemari ball as it rolls away from it. The puppy is detailed with droopy eyes and a gently protruding snout, framed by floppy ears, its fur minutely incised; the ball in contrast is smoothly polished giving it a lustrous surface. Very large, asymmetrical himotoshi to the side, the larger hole of oval shape.

LENGTH 4.4 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear. One old age crack with associated fills.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related wood netsuke of a puppy playing with a piece of string on an awabi shell, by Okatomo, Kyoto school, 18th century, 3.7 cm wide, see Eskenazi (1984) Japanese Netsuke, Ojime, Inro, Lacquer-Ware, no. 69. Also compare to a wood of a rat on a kemari ball, by the Kyoto master Ransen, at Bonhams, Asian Art, 5 December 2017, Edinburgh, lot 61.
