Description

A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A WOLF WITH HAUNCH OF VENISON, ATTRIBUTED TO OKATOMO

Attributed to Yamaguchi Okatomo, signed Tomotada 友忠
Japan, Kyoto, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Carved as an emaciated, snarling wolf with neatly incised spine and fur, pricked ears, and pupils inlaid in dark horn, the tail tucked underneath, guarding a haunch of venison under its front paw. Natural himotoshi, signed underneath TOMOTADA - however much more likely a work by his star pupil Okatomo.

LENGTH 4.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, tiny nibbles, and light surface scratches.
Provenance: From a noted private collection in Munich, Germany.

Auction comparison:
This model, often signed Tomotada but actually by a member of the Oka-school, is much more frequently seen in ivory. Compare a closely related ivory netsuke of a wolf with venison, by Okanobu, at Van Ham, Asiatische Kunst, 8 December 2016, Cologne, lot 2452 (sold for EUR 9,030). For a related model in wood, signed Tomotada but likely by Okatomo, see Bonhams, The Julius & Arlette Katchen Collection of Fine Netsuke Part II, 6 November 2018, London, lot 91 (sold for GBP 7,500).
