KOMA KYUI II: A FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO DEPICTING BOATS IN A HARBOR

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright form and oval section, bearing a lustrous roiro ground, finely decorated in iro-e hiramaki-e and takamaki-e, as well as kirigane and aogai, to depict two large treasure ships anchored in a harbor, a large full moon to the back, the harbor with small boats and overgrown tall grasses, and with geese descending in the night sky. The interior compartments of nashiji with gold fundame rims. Signed to the underside KOMA KYUI YASUTSUGU saku, Do (Koma) Kyuhaku Yasuaki kiwame kore [This is made by Koma Kyui Yasutsugu, certified by Koma Kyuhaku Yasuaki].

With a wood ojime in the form of a repentant oni seated with one hand clasped around a fan and a large carved nut netsuke decorated with a branch of nanten berries, the leaves inlaid in silvered and gilt metal. Metal-ringed, asymmetrical himotoshi to the back.

HEIGHT 9.2 cm (inro), 4.9 cm (netsuke)

Condition: The inro in very good condition with only very light wear to edges. The netsuke with losses to inlays, cracks, and natural flaws.

The family name Koma belongs to one of the most famous dynasties of lacquer artists, founded by Koma Kyui I who worked in Edo in the 17th century; members of the family continued as lacquerers to the court and shogunate until well into the 19th century. Probably all the family lacquered inro among other objects, starting with Kyui I who was recorded as having lacquered inro for the shogun Iemitsu.
