Description

A FINE GOLD AND SILVER LACQUER FOUR-CASE ‘SENBA-ZURU’ (ONE THOUSAND CRANES) INRO

Unsigned
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1603-1868)

Of almost square shape, bearing a fine roiro ground, masterfully decorated in togidashi-e as well as gold and silver takamaki-e. The intricate design depicts a dense landscape scene, centered around a meandering river, where a gathering of cranes adds a sense of movement. Some cranes are standing gracefully along the riverbank, while others soar towards the top case, enhancing the dynamic composition. The landscape is further enriched with delicate kirigane flakes and e-nashiji. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims and with an inscription on the top case indicating the medicine originally contained within.

LENGTH 6 cm, HEIGHT 6.8 cm

Condition: Very good condition with a tiny nick and dent to the top case, typical nibbles to the rims, and expected traces of use.

In Edo-period Japan (1603–1868), cranes (tsuru) were revered as symbols of longevity, wisdom, and good fortune, deeply rooted in Shinto and Buddhist traditions. Believed to live for a thousand years, cranes were associated with immortality and divine protection, often appearing in lacquerware, textiles, and paintings as auspicious motifs.
