KAJIKAWA: A FINE INLAID FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH A MONKEY AND A HORSE

By a member of the Kajikawa family, signed Kajikawa 梶川 saku 作 with seal Ei 榮
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1603-1868)

Of upright rectangular shape, decorated in gold, silver, and red takamaki-e against a lustrous roiro ground. The front depicts a monkey wearing a red eboshi (ceremonial hat) and holding an aogai-inlaid whip as well as a gold leash, which gracefully extends to the reverse. On the opposite side, a horse, restrained by the monkey’s leash, is depicted with mother-of-pearl-inlaid hooves. Signed to the underside KAJIKAWA saku [made by Kajikawa] and sealed. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

LENGTH 6.2 cm, HEIGHT 6.5 cm

Condition: Good condition with nibbles to the rims, losses to cord holes, expected traces of use. Some inlays likely replaced and light rubbing to lacquer as visible in the image provided.
Provenance: Ex-collection Maurice Gar?on, collection no. 120. An old label pasted to the interior ‘Collection Maurice Gar?on 120’. Maurice Gar?on (1889-1967) was a French novelist, historian, essayist and lawyer, known for his works Le destin exécrable de Guillemette Babin’ (1948) and ‘Avec André Gide’ (1951) among others. He assembled an impressive collection of Japanese art including fine lacquerware and inro.

The Kajikawa family is a famous dynasty of lacquerers founded in the 17th century in Edo.
