? KAJIKAWA: A FINE INLAID FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH A MONKEY TRAINER

By a member of the Kajikawa family, signed Kajikawa 梶川 saku 作 with seal Ei 榮
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular form with rounded edges, superbly decorated with chinkinbori and red hiramaki-e on a lustrous roiro ground, depicting a foreign monkey trainer on one side, holding a cane and a red rope that extends to the reverse, where it is securely tied to his monkey. The trainer is dressed in a finely textured mino (traditional straw raincoat), his robe adorned with aogai (mother-of-pearl) inlays, while his pants are inlaid with kirigane. On the reverse, the monkey, characterized by a red face and aogai-inlaid eyes, is shown holding a sprig of leafy bamboo over its shoulder. Signed to the lower side KAJIKAWA saku [made by Kajikawa] with a large pot seal. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

LENGTH 5.5 cm, HEIGHT 7.5 cm

Condition: Good condition. Light rubbing, as well as typical traces of use and minor age-related wear as visible in the images provided.
Provenance: Ex-collection Georges Weil. Georges Weil (b. 1938) was a jewelry designer and sculptor of precious metals who formed an important collection of netsuke in the 1960s and also started carving netsuke in the 1970s. His works have been featured in many important exhibitions throughout the world, and are in the collections of many noted museums, such as the British Museum. Christie’s, A Private Collection of Japanese Art, 20 October 2014, New York, lot 42 (part lot).

The Kajikawa family is a famous dynasty of lacquerers founded in the 17th century in Edo.
