Description

A SUPERB AOGAI-INLAID FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH TWO CARPS

Unsigned
Japan, late 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular form, exquisitely decorated with takamaki-e against an iridescent irregularly flaked aogai ground. The design features two elegantly rendered carps, one in tsuishu (carved red lacquer) and the other in gold lacquer, their dynamically swinging bodies moving across both sides. The eyes are inlaid in pale horn with dark pupils. Textured, green-lacquered takamaki-e seaweed rises from below the two carps across both sides. The risers lacquered in gold fundame. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims and with an inscription on the top case indicating the medicine originally contained within.

LENGTH 5.3 cm, HEIGHT 7.4 cm

Condition: Good condition, some rubbing to lacquer and minor wear and expected traces of use as visible in the image provided.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related three-case inro with fish on an aogai-flaked ground, dated to the 19th century, from the collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession number 1982.244.10a-c.
